Checking for understanding in color

Make these paint swatch cards for an easy way to have your students communicate their understanding of the material in a clear but quiet way.

Lindsay at “My Life as a Fifth Grade Teacher” attached four labels of understanding from “It’s crystal clear” to “I’m in a fog” onto paint swatch cards. Then, during independent reading or small group activities, her students indicate how clear the material is to them by moving a clothespin up and down their cards.

This is a quick and easy way for any teacher to assess the needs of many students at once and to encourage all learners to ask for help in a respectful and efficient way.
