What is your calculus motto?

April 27, 2011

If you are a high school math teacher you will want to get a cup of coffee, sit down in front of your computer, and take some time to browse the Continuous Everywhere but Differentiable Nowhere blog. This teacher loves math is obviously committed to reaching all learners! His post on math mottos is the feature today. I chose it because I love it when educators have students draw, talk, or write about math learning. Many students can solve the problems teachers assign but never get an opportunity to think about what they are doing.

This fun exercise will be a playful challenge for number-loving students and an opportunity for language-loving learners to shine. It can also serve as an assessment of sorts. Do students create a motto that demonstrates understanding? frustration? confidence?

You can try this in other subject areas as well. How about assigning students to create a classroom motto? A motto for today’s political climate? A motto for chemists?
